PinPoint Punching!
Before I spend my time to write this out, it can be lengthy, so let’s see what you know or think. I want a few thoughts on it before I write my view. Even though Jimmy did not us names (as I remember) for them, he did show them, much more for one than the other. So start with what is the difference between the purpose/use of the “Dragon Fist & Phoenix Fist”?

I’m not shure what exactly are either of those strikes would be, but I’m assuming dragon fist is what I know as a dragon tooth punch, where you slightly extend your middle knuckle out for a pinpoint strike, concentrating the force to a smaller area for stronger impact.

So to answer your question the different strikes served different purposes, or to fit into different targets.

The dragon tooth punch is great for hitting jaw hing, kidneys, liver, or sternum (hom him chewy). Cuped hands for ear slaps that burst the ear drum. Wedge chops to the throat, palm strikes to the ribs. Or one of my least favorites to receive, a goose strike where all fingers condense to a point and you strike into the nerve within the armpit.

The idea, is that the strikes fit into a target.

I wonder why it is so hard to get a discussion going on anything related to San Soo, I guess they feel they know it all. If the second and third generation thinks like that, they will be limited to teaching the same things over and over and the Art will be no more. Maybe Jimmy did not explain things perfectly but it was important to us that cared to figure it out and understand it. I remember guy’s who would say, “that doesn’t work, let’s practice something else”. Here is a tip, Dragon Fist is for about every strike but Phoenix Fist is better with soft tissue, the angle is much different. Both are very painful and either can end a fight.

Personally, I prefer Hammer Fist/ Heel Palm for head, easy, fast transition to near/immediate Comb Grab, One Knuckle nearly anywhere else…

PS My last statement was not directed at the few people who responded, they had the guts to step out. It is directed to those who read and never say anything.

It really is not what we prefer because that is self limiting, it is the brain that decides, you load it with technique and it will decide what it prefers. I have a new Jimmy vid coming out where Jimmy says something to a school and its instructors like, “You guys do the same thing all the time, hammer, back hand, and kick, over and over, that’s dumb”.
